ILLINOIS 8
:
Northwest Cook County - Schaumburg; Palatine
Most of the 8th's population lies in the affluent, well-established
suburbs of northwest Cook County, about 30 miles from Chicago, west of the
North Shore suburbs. Population growth has spurred new developments through
western Lake County and into the "chain o' lakes" vacation communities near
the Wisconsin border.
The district became a huge employment center in the late 1980s, drawing
commuters away from Chicago and causing serious traffic problems. Like other
suburban areas, the 8th is struggling with problems that come with rapid
development and suburban sprawl. As in other northwestern suburban
districts, some of the 8th's cities, such as Schaumburg and Palatine, have
attracted corporate headquarters. Motorola has set up shop in Schaumburg.
The 8th has become known as the most Republican district in Illinois for
its 30-year support of Rep. Crane, a conservative intellectual who was
elected long before former Speaker Newt Gingrich rose to popularity with the
"Contract With America."
Unlike other staunchly Republican suburban districts, voters in the 8th
tend to be socially, as well as fiscally, conservative. The 8th's Republican
tradition has been moderated only slightly by newcomers and a small but
growing minority population.
