ILLINOIS 9
:
Chicago - North Side lakefront and suburbs; Evanston
The 9th starts in the liberal suburbs of Evanston and Skokie and runs
south through Chicago's multi-ethnic North Side, into one of the city's most
prosperous lakefront neighborhoods. More than 70 percent of the district's
population is white, with the remainder evenly divided among blacks,
Hispanics and Asians.
Two-thirds of the district's population lives in Chicago. The
neighborhoods of Rogers Park, Edgewater and Uptown are an eclectic mix of
Asian, European and African immigrants. Southeast Asians, the area's newest
arrivals, have opened shops and restaurants, revitalizing the area's
economy.
Lakeview, the district's southernmost point, includes the city's largest
gay population. The area around Wrigley Field, home of baseball's Cubs, has
become a mecca for affluent young professionals.
The mix of immigrants, affluent urbanites and Northwestern U. students
makes the 9th solidly Democratic. Although the "lakefront liberals" tend not
to vote for machine candidates, they vote reliably Democratic. The district
also contains a sizable Jewish population in the suburbs that candidates
court, although issues such as aid to Israel rarely decide elections.
