ILLINOIS 13
:
Southwest Chicago suburbs - Naperville
More than half of the 13th's population lives in the southern part of
booming DuPage County. The district's biggest city, Naperville, has seen its
population almost triple since 1980. Sprawling subdivisions and a newly
refurbished downtown characterize this fairly young suburb. The 13th also
incorporates the residential southwestern corner of Cook County and a mostly
rural slice of northern Will County.
Argonne National Laboratory, in southeast DuPage, and Fermi National
Accelerator Laboratory, just over the border in the 14th District, have made
the area a hub of scientific research. Both Naperville and Oak Brook, home
to a growing number of corporate headquarters, have become leading business
centers outside Chicago. These cities increasingly draw in commuters,
creating serious traffic problems in suburban communities.
Voters in the 13th tend to be white-collar executive types, loyal to
free enterprise. DuPage has gained a national reputation as a Republican
stronghold, and the 13th is a reliably Republican district. Some residents,
however, hold more liberal opinions on family and women's issues (such as
equal pay and child care), as well as environmental protection.
