INDIANA 6
:
Central - Suburban Indianapolis
Home to Indianapolis suburbanites and rural farmers, the 6th is
Indiana's wealthiest district. This region's countryside is rapidly being
taken over by suburbanites, a largely Republican constituency. Republican
presidential nominee Bob Dole won the district with 63 percent in 1996, his
best showing in the state.
The district's most affluent residents and its few minorities live in
northern Indianapolis and in the Hamilton County suburbs of Carmel, Fishers
and Noblesville. Here, rapidly growing populations of white-collar workers
in electronics and financial services bring median incomes up to $60,000.
Fort Benjamin Harrison (shared with the 10th District) was closed in 1991,
but backers successfully converted it for corporate, military finance,
residential and state government use. The base is now the centerpiece of a
revitalized downtown Lawrence.
The 6th's rural communities in Clinton, Tipton, eastern Hancock and
southern Johnson counties rely on farming and the agricultural products
industry - corn, livestock, snack chips and seed are staples of the economy.
Suburbs are starting to encroach somewhat on Hancock County. The rural
communities are slightly less affluent but just as conservative as their
suburban counterparts.
