MINNESOTA 3
:
Western Twin Cities suburbs - Bloomington; Minnetonka
Minnesota's most affluent district, the 3rd encompasses Minneapolis'
western suburbs, where large white-collar populations are grounded in fiscal
conservatism but adhere to moderate social views on issues like abortion.
The district also sometimes exhibits an independent streak.
With its abundance of high-tech industry, white-collar workers, golf
courses and middle-class homes, the 3rd is a classic picture of suburban
living. Several prominent Fortune 500 corporations have their headquarters
in the district. Northwest Airlines, just outside the district (in the 6th),
is another big employer.
The 3rd's second largest city, Brooklyn Park, was governed in the early
1990s by Mayor Jesse Ventura, who has since become governor with the 3rd's
electoral blessing. The district has sent moderate Republicans to Congress
since 1970, but at the same time, it supported a conservative Republican for
senator and Clinton for president.
Brooklyn Park, Bloomington and Brooklyn Center's blue-collar residents
vote for the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, but the Republican and affluent
south and west of the 3rd casts most of the vote, giving the 3rd a tilt to
the right.
