MINNESOTA 5
:
Minneapolis and suburbs
Established at the northernmost navigable point on the Mississippi
River, Minneapolis accounts for most of the 5th's vote and has supported
liberal Rep. Sabo since 1978. Except for the affluent, white suburb of Edina
in the southwest, the district elects Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party
candidates at all levels.
The power of organized labor has waned as Minneapolis has evolved from a
blue-collar mill town into a major business hub. However, the shift has yet
to change the city's liberal orientation, which is bolstered by a strong
arts community and the 37,000-student U. of Minnesota in eastern
Minneapolis.
The presence of Fortune 500 companies could not halt a late-1980s
downturn in the regional economy, but the Minneapolis economy performed well
in the 1990s, attracting even more well-educated, white-collar workers to
Honeywell, General Mills and Pillsbury corporate headquarters.
Although Minneapolis is known for its Scandinavian heritage, the 5th is
the state's most racially diverse district. Black and Asian communities help
shape areas north and south of the city and contribute to the district's
Democratic voter rolls.
