MINNESOTA 6
:
Eastern, southern Twin Cities suburbs
The 6th's semicircle of fast-growing Twin City suburbs has attracted one
of the nation's largest concentrations of young families. Residents in the
district's eastern suburbs build "starter castles" and pursue white-collar
careers in the city or the district's growing employment sector.
Several redistrictings in the 1990s added affluent and Republican
western suburbs and then removed them, leaving the 6th a highly competitive
district, though the district's three-term Democratic House member has
managed to retain his seat.
Blue-collar communities in Anoka County in the north are faithful
Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party supporters, as are working-class areas of
Dakota County. But their political voice is competing with growing numbers
of young professionals, who tend to be socially progressive but fiscally
conservative. These newcomers are willing to split their ticket and have
been attracted to independent candidates. More than one-fourth of the
district voted for Ross Perot in 1992, and the 6th solidly supported Gov.
Jesse Ventura in 1998.
The 6th's economy is diversified and benefits from the presence of
medical manufacturers, high-tech research and publishing companies.
Northwest Airlines, headquartered in the area since 1952, is the district's
economic linchpin, employing more than 14,000 people.
Washington County borders St. Paul on the east and, due to easy city
access, these lakefront suburbs make up the state's fastest growing county.
