NORTH CAROLINA 2
:
Central - Parts of Raleigh and Rocky Mount
Anchored in the thriving state capital of Raleigh, the 2nd fans eastward
to take in several surrounding rural counties. While the area's economic
hub, the high-tech Research Triangle Park, lies in the neighboring 4th, its
influence radiates through the low hills of this eastern Piedmont district.
A mix of Research Triangle techies, university academics and government
employees live in Raleigh and form the basis of the district's Democratic
tilt. More than a third of voters are located here and in surrounding Wake
County. The rest of the county holds booming and increasingly urban bedroom
communities such as Knightdale and Garner. Sprawl has begun to infiltrate
the surrounding counties as well, but they still rely primarily on tobacco
farming (especially in Johnston, Nash and Harnett counties) and blue-collar
manufacturing jobs.
Redrawn for the election that began the 106th Congress, the district
lost its share of Durham County but gained most of downtown Raleigh and its
eastern suburbs. The trade made the 2nd more suburban and slightly less
Democratic but ups its percentage of blacks from 22 to 28 percent. The new
2nd also acquired part of hog-producing, politically swinging Sampson
County. While Democratic registration remains high, many of the southern
counties, notably Johnston, have begun to vote more Republican, especially
at the state and national level.
