NORTH CAROLINA 5
:
North Central - Part of Winston-Salem
In this northern Piedmont district, Mayberry meets R.J. Reynolds. The
district's northern counties, which abut the Virginia border, are filled
with small rural towns such as Mount Airy, the childhood home of Andy
Griffith and the inspiration for the fictional setting of his 1960s
television series. But a third of the district's residents live to the south
in Winston-Salem and surrounding Forsyth County, home to R.J. Reynolds
Tobacco Co. which sits just outside the district line in the 12th District.
The economy of Forsyth County has changed over the past few years,
veering away from the textile manufacturing and tobacco production that were
once its bread and butter. While the leaf still employs several thousand, it
is now second to the health care industry, due in part to the medical center
at Wake Forest U. Banking also is on the rise. Textile and blue-collar
manufacturing still prevail throughout the other counties, and grazing
cattle wander over Surry County's low, rolling hills.
While Winston-Salem is 40 percent black, many of these residents live in
the city's downtown area, which belongs to the neighboring 12th. This leaves
the 5th as hearty Republican territory. Redistricting for the election that
began the 106th Congress removed the district's eastern and western
extremities but replaced them with similar areas, leaving the district's
makeup largely unchanged. Most counties lean Republican at all levels,
except the 40 percent-black Caswell County, which is Democratic.
