NORTH CAROLINA 6
:
Central - Greensboro and High Point
Based in the heart of the state, Greensboro anchors the 6th at its
northern tip. More than half the district live here and in surrounding
middle-class Guilford County. The 6th then spreads south to take in High
Point, the "Furniture Capital of the World," as well as Moore County and the
eastern half of Davidson County.
Greensboro, the third-largest city in the state, is home to a blend of
manufacturing and service industries. Textiles, furniture and tobacco
processing have long been the economic backbone of both the city and the
district. Insurance companies, an American Express regional credit card
service center and six colleges and universities have helped to diversify
Greensboro's economy. The region has grown at a steady pace, and a proposal
by Federal Express to create a hub at the Piedmont Triad International
Airport in Greensboro could bring an influx of jobs.
Redrawn for the election that began the 106th Congress, the district
acquired several of the urban, Democratic pieces of the Interstate 85
corridor that had belonged to the 12th, boosting the 6th's percentage of
blacks from 7 to 21 percent. But its acquisition of the retirement, golf
course-laden, Republican county of Moore, home to more than a few former
Fort Bragg soldiers, balances that out. Due in part to its new borders and
an economic and political shift over the past few years, the 6th has swung
from a competitive district to solid Republican turf.
