NORTH CAROLINA 9
:
Southwest - Gastonia; part of Charlotte
The 9th is more than just the suburbs around Charlotte, the largest
metro area in the state. About half of the district's residents live in
rural, textile-producing counties west of the city.
The primarily white suburbs on the southern side of Charlotte feed the
city many of its bankers, brokers, accountants, health care professionals
and other white-collar workers. The region's tremendous growth has brought
the traffic congestion, shopping malls and higher home values that usually
accompany suburban sprawl.
To the west, life is different. The district encompasses the fields,
barns, lakes and textile mills typical of rural North Carolina. Some
factories have sprouted up as Charlotte has grown, and businesses have begun
to use the outlying area as a distribution center.
While redistricting for the election that began the 106th Congress upped
the percentage of registered Democratic voters from 50 to 52 percent, the
9th remains solidly Republican at the state and federal level. The remap
removed many suburban swing-Republicans from Charlotte and replaced them
with the rock-ribbed Republicans of the western, rural Bible Belt counties.
At the local level, the counties differ: Mecklenburg is split politically,
Cleveland is traditionally and solidly Democratic, Gaston is heavily
Republican and Lincoln is traditionally Democratic, though moving to the
right.

December 1998 succeeded in hoisting the largest flying American flag in the

Charlotte more than 20 miles away; Cleveland County claims to produce more
than half the world's supply of lithium.
