NORTH CAROLINA 11
:
West - Asheville
Based in the mountains and foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, the
11th is a largely rural region dotted with tree farms, wood mills, and
campgrounds. While agriculture and forestry have long played a major role in
the region's economy, retail trade, health care and education have emerged
as additional viable industries. Tourism also has a large role, with people
flocking to the area to ski, hike the national park and Mount Mitchell (the
highest peak east of the Mississippi) and tour the palatial Biltmore House,
home of Cornelius Vanderbilt's grandson.
Asheville, which along with surrounding Buncombe County takes in nearly
a third of the district's residents, is the 11th's economic focal point.
Residents recently spruced up its downtown, and efforts are under way to
attract high-tech industry.
Long a hotly contested district, the 11th has moved toward the
Republican column, thanks in part to a large influx of retirees. In state
and national elections, it leans Republican, but at the local level it's
more divided, with the southern counties voting Republican and the northern
ones leaning Democrat. Redistricting for the election that began the 106th
Congress had little effect, increasing Republican registration by only 1
percent.
