OHIO 5
:
Northwest - Bowling Green; Sandusky
The 5th is shaped like a big bow tie and runs from Ohio's northwest
corner to the middle of the state. At its center, forming part of the knot,
is the university town of Bowling Green (shared with the 9th). At the
district's far northeast is Sandusky, a Lake Erie port and the district's
largest town. The district is a mixture of fertile, flat farmland, limestone
plains and small towns.
In the eastern counties of Erie and Sandusky, the economy's strength
rests largely on manufacturing. Wineries and sugar beet production also are
key features of the local economy, as is tourism around Lake Erie. The 5th's
western counties are almost exclusively devoted to agriculture and food
packaging. Migrant workers who live in farm camps during the harvesting
months help boost this district's Hispanic population to 3 percent, three
times the state's average of about 1 percent.
Historically strong GOP territory, the 5th's Republican character has
been changing in recent presidential elections, although support for
congressional and state Republicans has remained solid. One of the few
Democratic-leaning areas is Sandusky, a fishing market and coal port. Erie
County casts the largest share of the district's vote, and its sizable
blue-collar element occasionally pushes the county into the Democratic
column.
