OHIO 6
:
South - Portsmouth; Chillicothe; Athens
The 6th is the state's largest district, taking in all of Ohio's
southeast corner and reaching across to fast-growing Warren County in Ohio's
southwest. It includes an economically struggling and culturally
conservative swath of Appalachia that encompasses some of southeastern
Ohio's poorest rural areas.
While registered Republicans outnumber Democrats overall, the district
is politically split and serves as a battleground in congressional and
presidential races. Athens - home to Ohio U. - is traditionally one of the
state's most Democratic counties.
Many of the district's counties, especially those along the Ohio River
in old coal mining territory, suffer high unemployment. Among these is
Scioto County, the 6th's most populous, which also contains Portsmouth, the
district's largest city. While Portmouth's steel and bricks have long
sustained the region, the district's economic linchpin is the nearby
uranium-enrichment facility located in Pike County.
