OHIO 7
:
West central - Springfield; Lancaster
The 7th resembles a gaping mouth ready to swallow Columbus whole. Its
nine counties surround Columbus, albeit from afar, on three sides. In the
north, the 7th's rural counties - Union and Champaign - have been GOP
strongholds for generations. The rest of the district, including Clark
County and the city of Springfield, is more politically competitive but
maintains a strong Republican presence.
Residential growth around Columbus has especially affected Clark and
Fairfield counties, which serve as bedroom communities and are filling up
with white-collar commuters.
Clark and its county seat, Springfield, suffered economically in the
early 1980s but have seen a dramatic turnaround. New companies, including
trucking and auto manufacturing plants and distribution firms, now call the
area home. Elsewhere in the district, agribusiness and the defense industry
contribute to the economy's strength. The Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in
Greene County is the largest single-site employer in Ohio.
