OHIO 8
:
Southwest - Hamilton; Middletown
Running along the state's western border, the 8th is anchored by Butler
County, home to the district's two largest cities, Hamilton and Middletown.
Butler has long voted solidly Republican, but the expansion of its suburbs
has escalated a rightward trend. The county is known for electing some of
Ohio's more conservative state and congressional legislators.
About half of the 8th's residents live outside Butler County in a string
of fertile Corn Belt counties. Corn and soybeans are the major cash crops
here, and poultry and livestock also are moneymakers. Darke and Mercer
counties are more rural and more Democratic.
Overall, the district has seen significant growth, especially in Butler
and Miami counties. Union Township, in Butler County, is one of the state's
fastest-growing suburbs, and many residents here commute to Cincinnati or
Dayton. While bad weather and low pork prices hurt the 8th's dominant
agriculture industry in the late 1990s, the district's strong manufacturing
base, along with new construction and commercial development, helped prevent
economic hardship.
