OHIO 14
:
Northeast - Akron
Located in northeastern Ohio, the 14th includes the city of Akron and
its surroundings. Akron's history as a blue-collar factory town makes the
district heavily Democratic. At one time, 90 percent of the nation's tires
were manufactured in this district. As the major tire companies have cut
back manufacturing operations in the 14th, the population has decreased, and
the economy has made the shift from industrial to white-collar jobs.
Although the tire companies have moved many of their factories, many of
their corporate headquarters and research facilities remain in Akron,
providing steady employment and economic strength for the city. The city
also has been renovating its downtown and recreational areas along the Ohio
& Erie Canal. Blue-collar descendants combined with blacks, ethnic whites
and the academic community at the U. of Akron help the city retain its
Democratic character from its blue-collar past.
North of Akron, suburbs and farmland in northern Summit County and
western Portage County provide a Republican presence in the district.
However, they are too sparse to overcome Akron's Democratic advantage.
Although Democratic presidential candidates have a strong hold on the 14th,
local officials in the state legislature are evenly split between the two
parties.
