OHIO 15
:
Central - Western Columbus and suburbs
The 15th includes most of Columbus, the state's centrally located
capital, and spans part of Franklin and all of Madison counties to the south
and west of the city. It also takes in the northwestern corner of Pickaway
County. While it does not include the heart of downtown Columbus, the 15th
encompasses Ohio State U. and most of the academic community.
Columbus is not known as a tourist attraction except in August, when the
Ohio State Fair opens, and on Saturdays in autumn when the Ohio State
Buckeyes play football at home. However, the region is generally regarded as
a good place to raise a family. Covering much of Franklin County's expanding
service sector, which includes several large high-tech research centers, the
district has a steady employment base. Madison County, although comparable
to Franklin in size, is much more rural and less densely populated.
The district traditionally has been the more Republican of the two that
divide the capital - the nearby 12th includes most of the heavily black
East Side of Columbus. The university's academic community and neighborhoods
in the near West Side of Columbus support Democrats, but they are more than
offset by Republicans in northern Columbus and the western suburbs.
Republican presidential candidates do very well in Upper Arlington and other
affluent suburbs to the west.
