PENNSYLVANIA 10
:
Northeast - Scranton
Situated in the upper northeast corner of Pennsylvania, the 10th is home
to the Pocono Mountains, a popular honeymoon retreat known for its outdoor
activities, including skiing, rafting and golfing. Nestled in these
mountains is Scranton, one of the state's larger cities but a diminishing
influence with the long decline of coal and railroads.
New industries, including technology, have moved into the 10th, but the
labor force hasn't always kept pace, forcing officials to develop retraining
programs. Tourism remains strong, especially during the summer months.
The 10th has leaned Republican for decades, more so after many union
jobs disappeared. Many elections are close, but fiscally conservative
viewpoints tend to help Republicans, despite the area's penchant for federal
dollars. Presidential elections are often more competitive than those for
Congress, which usually favor the GOP.
