PENNSYLVANIA 13
:
Northwest Philadelphia suburbs - the Main Line
Anchored in Montgomery County, 20 miles west of Philadelphia, the 13th is the wealthiest district in the state. This area is known as the Main
Line, after the Pennsylvania Railroad's Main Line, the railway along which
doctors, lawyers and old-money families built their estates.
This affluent district has maintained its Republican voting record at
the local level. But voters endorsed congressional and presidential
candidates from both parties in the 1990s. Republican Sen. Arlen Specter
remains a district favorite, yet the 13th drifted from its Republican
tradition in 1992 and '98 by electing a Democrat to the House. The district
also supported Clinton in both 1992 and '96.
The 13th is growing both residentially and commercially. Housing units
have sprouted along Route 422, occupied by employees of pharmaceutical
companies that have relocated to Upper Providence Township. The growth has
forced Montgomery County to address typical suburban sprawl issues.
