PENNSYLVANIA 19
:
South Central - York
Located in south-central Pennsylvania, the 19th includes all of Adams
and York counties and a small portion of Cumberland County. At the edge of
Pennsylvania Dutch country, the 19th's historic landscape has a reliably
Republican constituency and flourishing agricultural and manufacturing
industries. In Adams County, a largely agricultural area, 1.8 million
tourists visit the site of the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg each year. Many
come for the annual reenactment of one of the Civil War's most significant
battles.
Even as Clinton captured the Keystone State in 1992 and '96, the
counties of the 19th stayed true to their Republican roots. Democrats in the
19th find sanctuary in the counties' more urban areas, such as Gettysburg
and York, the district's largest city.
This GOP enclave continues to attract tourists and business. Located at
the crossroads of several major highways, the 19th is a prime location for
manufacturing and distribution centers, including depots and logistical
support facilities for the Department of Defense. York County serves as the
district's industrial hub. Residential growth, another more recent trend in
the district, can also be attributed to the district's location, making the
area attractive to Marylanders in search of lower taxes and affordable real
estate.
