PENNSYLVANIA 20
:
Southwest - The Mon Valley; Washington
Located south of Pittsburgh, the 20th includes all of Washington and
Greene counties and part of Allegheny, Westmoreland and Fayette. This
region's past is marked by the boom-and-bust cycles of the coal and steel
industries, while its recent history has been marked by repeated efforts to
move into the economy of the 21st century.
The demise of the district's traditional industries led to massive job
losses. In the coal towns of Fayette and Greene counties and the steel towns
of Donora and Brownsville along the Monongahela River, unemployment soared,
reaching as high as 200,000 in the 1980s. Now, economic development is
visible, especially in Washington County with the construction of
Southpointe, a 600-acre industrial park near Canonsburg.
The 20th clings to the Democratic tradition of its industrialized past.
Democrats outnumber Republicans 2-to-1. Republicans can be found in Peters
Township in Allegheny County and in parts of Westmoreland County. Despite
the presence of these Republican voters, the 20th is known as the most
reliably Democratic region in the state outside the cities of Pittsburgh and
Philadelphia.
