VIRGINIA 1
:
East - Parts of Newport News and Hampton; Fredericksburg
The 1st lies in a crescent shape along Virginia's coast, picking up the
city of Fredericksburg in the north and sweeping around to take in historic
Williamsburg and parts of the shipbuilding cities of Hampton and Newport
News in the south. The district also stretches across the Chesapeake Bay to
include Accomack and Northampton counties on Virginia's Eastern Shore.
After a court-ordered remapping of the neighboring 3rd District in 1998,
the 1st had to adjust its lines, losing parts of Hampton and Richmond
suburbs and regaining some of the inland counties it lost in a 1992
redrawing, such as Essex and King and Queen. But the remapping should have
little political impact on the 1st - a district where GOP candidates perform
well on the state level.
Industry in the 1st revolves around its military installations and NASA
sites, which have attracted a growing high-tech private sector. Colleges and
universities also contribute to the district's economic base, as do
shipbuilding and tourism. The most popular tourist destinations -
Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown - recall Virginia's Colonial past.
Inland, agriculture and chickens help drive the economy.
