VIRGINIA 8
:
D.C. suburbs - Part of Fairfax County; Arlington; Alexandria
An arc-shaped area in Northern Virginia, the Democratic 8th is one of
the wealthiest districts in the state, although there are poorer pockets
along the U.S. Route 1 corridor. The 8th is mostly white, but ethnic
diversity has increased over time, especially in Arlington County and
Alexandria. A smattering of landmarks gives the district a colonial flavor,
but the area is far from old-fashioned. The 8th bustles with technology
businesses and defense contractors, drawn to the district's substantial
military presence, including the Pentagon.
Fairfax County is Virginia's most populous jurisdiction, and in the
1990s it led the district in growth. The trend continued elsewhere in the
8th. While government and defense-related employment is important to the
economy, high-tech took off as the hot industry of the 1990s.
The 8th votes overwhelmingly Democratic in congressional and
presidential elections. Away from the Democratic base in Arlington and
Alexandria, affluent voters in McLean elect a few Republicans locally.
