CALIFORNIA 27
:
Northeastern Los Angles County; Pasadena; Burbank
The 27th is set in the rolling San Gabriel Mountains, which form the
eastern border of the Los Angeles Basin. The Angeles National Forest
dominates the district's northeast, and suburbs are spread evenly
throughout. Over the years, immigration has transformed the ethnic
composition of once-WASPish neighborhoods, and this previously Republican
district has become highly competitive.
The 27th's major cities include suburban Glendale, Burbank and Pasadena.
Glendale is the district's largest city, and about 35,000 Soviet Armenians
have settled there since 1985, joined by large numbers of Asians. Southern
Glendale is largely Latino and staunchly Democratic. About 60 different
languages are spoken in Glendale's public schools.
During redistricting in 1992, the 27th gained the heavily black and
Hispanic half of Pasadena, a city that includes NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory and many high-tech engineering firms attracted by CalTech. In
Burbank, television and movie production studios drive the economy.
