NEW YORK 5
:
Northeast Queens; northern Nassau and Suffolk counties
After redistricting in 1992, New York's Queens-based 7th transformed
into the 5th, which skirts the North Shore from Queens to Suffolk County.
Formerly a Democratic stronghold in multiracial Queens, the 5th became a
competitive district that includes some of the nation's richest communities.
The 5th has a small minority population, most of which consists of Asian
communities centered around Flushing. Numerous Jewish residents, throughout
the district, contribute to the district's Democratic flavor. New York City
Democrats have a slight edge in voter registration over heavily Republican
Suffolk County residents, and the 5th's longtime Democratic representative
easily won re-election in 1996 and '98. Clinton won the 5th by a near
30-percent margin in 1996.
Although pockets of low-income neighborhoods exist in the 5th, it
remains one of New York's most affluent districts. Many of the district's
residents commute to white-collar jobs outside the 5th, but the U.S.
Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, Queens College in Flushing, Newsday
in Melville and several major corporations contribute to the economy.
