AP Corrects Tobacco Trial Story
The Associated Press
Friday, Aug. 10, 2001; 6:08 p.m. EDT LOS ANGELES The Associated Press on Aug. 9 erroneously described a judge's order that conditionally reduced a $3 billion punitive damage verdict against Philip Morris to $100 million. The story described the reduction as a settlement; it was not a settlement offered by Philip Morris, but a reduced amount set by the judge himself.
The judge said he would grant Philip Morris a new trial on punitive damages unless the plaintiff, Richard Boeken, agreed to accept damages in the reduced amount.
