Q: How does City Guide to Go work?

  • City Guide to Go contains short reviews, addresses, phone numbers and nearby Metro stations for Tom Sietsema's 2005 Dining Guide and almost 200 Washington area bars and clubs. Once downloaded, these files can be found in the "Notes" folder of your iPod, and can be browsed by name, neighborhood, or type of cuisine or establishment (such as "Thai" or "Lounges").

Q: Will City Guide to Go work with my MP3 player?

  • City Guide to Go is compatible with all third- and fourth-generation iPods and all iPod Minis.

Q: How much space does this program occupy?

  • City Guide to Go takes up less than 1 MB of disk space. The average three-minute pop song on iTunes is about 3 MB.

Q: How often is it updated?

  • A new version of City Guide to Go is posted every other Friday. To update the listings, go into the Notes folder on your iPod, delete the existing City_Guide_To_Go folder, and download and install the latest version, following the directions to the right.

1

Download the file

After you agree to our terms and conditions, you'll be able to save the file somewhere on your computer. Unzip the file, using a program like WinZip or StuffIt. It will create a folder called City_Guide_To_Go.

2

Mount your iPod as an external drive

This is the complicated part. To transfer the files from your computer to your iPod, your iPod must be able to act as an external drive. You'll have to click "Enable Disk Use" in the iPod options window in iTunes; for detailed instructions, see the Apple site.

Once it's ready, you'll see your iPod as a drive in the My Computer window. Navigate to the Notes folder on your iPod, and drag the unzipped City_Guide_To_Go folder into Notes.

3

Get ready to browse

Once City Guide to Go is installed, you'll be able to find it on your iPod by going to Extras, then Notes, then into City Guide to Go. Using the scroll wheel, you can browse listings by name, by neighborhood or by type of venue or cuisine (i.e. Ethiopian, Italian, Pool Halls or Brewpubs).

To select a category or an establishment, click on it. Use the Menu button to move backward.
