How to Get the New Look

Spring has sprung with lots of bright color and florals for clothing. To balance it all out, think less is more when it comes to makeup and focus on emphasizing one feature. New York City-based makeup artist Sara Glick surveyed the runway and shared her recommendations for how to replicate the face of the new season.

Natural was the key word on Balenciaga (and Chloe) catwalks, a look sure to appeal to time-pressed young professionals who want a simple routine, noted Glick. Start with a tinted moisturizer, such as Laura Mercier's oil-free formula ($42). For any irritated spots, use a light concealer or highlighter pen to reflect light instead of just hiding imperfections. By Terry's Light-Expert wands ($54) can help divert attention from red spots. To highlight the eyes, like Balenciaga did, try a slightly more defined brow. Stila's Brow Set ($18) combines a lighter color to enhance and shape brows with a darker shade to strengthen the shape.

Cynthia Rowley stepped things up this season with a strong, monochromatic eye and lip. For the skin, said Glick, apply Giorgio Armani's Luminous Silk Foundation ($55). You can use this foundation alone or with your fingers or a sponge, mix it into your moisturizer for a lighter result. Unlike some other brands, Armani really caters to all skin colors, making it a lot easier to find your perfect shade. For eyes, brush the new and improved Max Factor's MAXeye Shadows in Gypsy Moon and the new color African Violet ($4.99) over the lid, going up to the crease and then pulling color out into a soft wing, extending the eye. Line the top lash line and the bottom inner and outer lash line with a similar, yet darker color, creating a frisson of drama. Finish up with a mascara in either black or one of Benefit's best sellers, Badgal Lash in blue ($19). "It makes eyes look whiter and brighter!" For lips, moisturize well and apply your favorite fuchsia or pink lipstick. Staying moisturized is important so try to find a color that's not too matte and not pearlescent. MAC's Amplified Creme lipsticks ($14) in Burnin' will work well with darker skin shades and Full Fuchsia and Girl About Town should do the trick for lighter skin.

At the 3.1 Phillip Lim spring collection, the favored look was a healthy bronze. Start off with a rich moisturizer. Jurlique offers some of the best skin care products available on the market. Their Balancing Day Care Cream ($40) is a staple. After applying, let it absorb and then apply a light foundation. Maybelline's Pure Makeup Foundation ($7.99) is great for all skin types and affordable to boot. Then use a pinky/bronze cream blush to the areas the sun would normally kiss, including the eyes. Nars's Multiple ($37) can be used as both blush and eye shadow for any woman on the go. Perfect picks for this look, according to Glick, are Malibu, Palm Beach and St. Barts. Line the eyes with a shimmery taupe or brown like Clinique's Colour Surge Eye Shadow Duo in Spruced Up ($17.50), making sure to get between the lashes for a soft look. To make your lashes look longer and fuller, finish your routine with Maybelline's Full and Soft mascara - in dark brown ($6.59).

Carolina Herrera brought her signature elegance to the budding season. One way to ensure her sophisticated look, said Glick, is to line the top lash with a thin, clean black line. Start off with a golden lid; try Vincent Longo's Wet Diamond Eyeshadow ($24) in Tempest Bronze or Dawn Flesh. Make sure you sweep the entire lid but don't go too far past the natural shape of the eye. Use either a brush or your finger to control the shadow. Also, apply a thin line, with the shadow, on the bottom lash line, closer to the inner section to create a brighter look. Line the top lash line with L'Oreal's Lineur Intense Felt Tip Liquid Liner in Carbon Black ($8.50). The felt tip allows you more control. Pull the liner, starting from the inner eye outwards to the end of the lashes. If you want to add a little wing, go for it.
Apply a peachy powder blush at the highest part of the cheek bone. Benefit's Georgia Face Powder ($28) will work wonders on lighter skin tones; for darker skin, try Dior's Bronze Blush in Sunset Fiesta ($41).
For the lip, Herrera adds a little bit of coral. Bobbi Brown's Creamy Lip Color in Nectar or Heather Buff ($22) will help you score Herrera's springy, sun-kissed look.
