Home & Garden: House Calls Home & Garden

Design Solutions

Install wood paneling to balance the large fireplace and detailed ceiling.

Paint traditional molding, like the coffered ceiling and wall paneling, a shade of gray (Benjamin Moore's Gettysburg Gray). This contemporary neutral makes those details seem less stuffy.

Create a cohesive space by painting the ceiling (Collingwood for trim, paneling and coffered ceiling, also from Benjamin Moore) a few shades lighter than the wall color.

Arrange furnishings so they face the room's focal point — the view — plus the TV and fireplace.

The Homeowners

"We love our upstairs family room. However, we have found it challenging to figure out the best way to furnish the room."

Designer's Critique

My inspiration for colors came from the painting. It makes a statement over the fireplace.
