Home & Garden: House Calls Home & Garden

Design Solutions

Update the fireplace facade by putting drywall over the brick wall and adding a two-tone concrete fireplace surround and hearth.

Add a staircase next to the fireplace to redirect the traffic. The homeowner requested this addition, but they should check with local building codes before doing any construction.

Replace the carpet with bamboo flooring. Install a dark flooring on a diagonal to make the room appear larger.

Install recessed lights along the room's edges to brighten the space.

The Homeowners

"The brick facade and mantel on the west fireplace wall is overwhelming, out of scale and dated."

Designer's Critique

"Provide a warm and cozy area near the fireplace to read, relax, play games and practice music."
