The Homeowners

The Zeolis are busy keeping up with their two daughters, who are 4 years old and 19 months old. Because they spend a lot of their time with the children, Lori would like to transform their 19-by-14 bedroom into a peaceful, "romantic getaway" for her and Rick. She wants to keep her bedroom suite and add more lighting, but she's not sure about the red painted on one of the room's wide walls.

Designer's Critique

Rearrange furniture so large pieces balance each other. In this case, move a dresser to the opposite wall so the dressing pieces won't crowd one corner. Incorporate the red wall and the wood paneling by choosing a complementary secondary wall color, painting an existing chest the same red as the walls and picking fabrics that are wheat-colored. To give the room a Cape Cod feel, incorporate accessories that reflect that theme, such as an antique quilt for the bed, which will also add color and pattern to the room.
