1. Paint.

2-5. Smaller-scale furniture will fit the narrow space better.

6-9. Lacking a fireplace or other architectural focal point, choose a strong, functional piece of furniture.

10-11. Ground the space with a traditional patterned rug.

12. Carve out a distinct entry.

13-14. Simple drapery panels will add contemporary lines.

15-16. Choose floor lamps, which take up less space than side tables with lamps, for their sculptural quality.

17-20. Accessorize with natural materials, a theme of mid-century design.

The Homeowner

Vanessa Andrews and her husband Keenan moved into their home two years ago, but haven't done anything to the living room except paint it. They are having trouble figuring out how to best configure the 18-by-11-foot space and blend the traditional-style house with their mid-century modern taste. The Andrews would like the room to have a casual, contemporary look that's also warm and comfortable.

Designer's Critique

Meredith Ericksen and Laura Caccese of Tuscan Blue Design say: In contemporary design, less is more. Combine the clean lines of modern furniture with comfort to make the room feel warm and inviting. Add simple drapery panels for softness. A light and warm neutral palette will convey a contemporary mood and make a small, narrow room appear bigger. Use rugs, accessories and artwork to add color and fuse traditional and contemporary styles.
