See past redesigns for more advice on updating your space.
The Boulays have spent several months remodeling their basement, which flooded two months after they bought the house. While the 27-by-21-foot dimensions are ample, low ceiling ducts and bad lighting have them stumped for how to use the space. They hope for room for a playroom, an office and a sewing/craft area. The beige-and-red flecked carpet is new.
Paula Grace Halewski-Zarnick of Paula Grace Designs in Ashburn says let the ductwork suggest smaller zones set up for specific activities; this will also help guard against messes sprawling from one area to another. Make the most of existing (and nonnegotiable) architectural elements, by turning columns into end tables by building a continuous shelf around them. Use the existing air hockey table to serve as a divider between the kid and adult areas.
