Home & Garden: House Calls Home & Garden

The Problem

The Bradshaws are renovating and really want to give their brick fireplace a much-needed makeover. "The brick is very heavy-looking and takes up three-quarters of the wall instead of the entire wall," says Eileen Bradshaw. Although the couple likes spending time in front of a fire, the 14-by-16½-foot room feels "dark, depressing and boring." They've recently installed pretty butterscotch wood floors and hope to soften the space with warm colors and show off an African basket collection and family photos.

The Solution

» Update the fireplace without tearing out masonry by covering the bricks with drywall.
