Home & Garden: House Calls Home & Garden

The Problem

Fernandez and her family bought a vacation home in November. The former homeowners had rented out the chalet in Western Maryland during the previous eight years, Fernandez writes in an e-mail, "so it is in horrible shape -- furniture, flooring and decorating-wise." Her husband loves the wood stove, Fernandez says. But she'd like to get rid of the country knickknacks in the 14-by-24-foot living and dining room and create a contemporary, casual space where she can entertain and relax.

The Solution

» Use soft colors to make the room feel like a relaxing retreat.
