Sweet Deals at Treat

HOLLY E. THOMAS  |  OCT. 7, 2007  |

If you've ever braved a sample sale, you know that squabbling over clothing and stripping down in public can negate the joy of finding a bargain. Wouldn't it be great if you could get the sample sale experience minus the headaches?

That's where Jennifer Donohue comes in. As owner of the three-month-old Alexandria boutique Treat, Donohue, 35, scoops up overstock clothing, discontinued pieces and out-of-season items from local stores, online shopping sites and New York City retail spots. "I decided to go with the same concept as a sample sale but in a boutique setting," she says.

While Donohue stays on the lookout for such locally popular brands as Milly and Nanette Lepore, she also seeks out lesser-known lines such as Mint Jodi Arnold and Robert Rodriguez. Other highlights are shoes and jewelry from local designers, as well as a small collection of handbags. On a recent visit, there were racks of deeply discounted summer items, including a black Madison Marcus frock for $50 and Delman canvas flats for $79 (originally $210 and $248, respectively).

With price tags dangling around the $125 mark for many items, not everything in the two-story townhouse comes cheap. But if half-priced Chloe handbags make your pulse race, Treat is a sweet destination indeed.

The following items are sold at Treat (114 S. Royal St., Alexandria, 703-535-3294,www.shoptreat.com).
