- Do a little research online. "There's a saying that the Civil War is probably second to porn on the Internet in terms of number of Web sites," says Eugene Nash III, webmaster for the 1st Maryland Volunteer Infantry. The Civil War Preservation Trust has a glossary, games and material for students and teachers. Civil War Interactive has links to blogs, what happened on today's date during the war and recipes for such period meals as knuckle of veal, cornmeal flapjacks and boiled calf brains. Yum.
- Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes that will allow you to walk undeterred through all manner of terrain -- gravel, meadow, mud, etc.
- Bring cotton balls or earplugs if you think your youngster will be alarmed by cannon or musket fire.
- Turn off car alarms after parking. The cannons tend to set them off.
- Don't bring dogs, as they are often startled by loud noises and can disrupt events.
