Local Pick-Your-Own Apple Varieties

Pick-your-own orchards in Maryland and Virginia offer dozens of apple varieties in a wide range of flavors, textures and hues. Here are 12 types of autumn apples most commonly available for local picking. Note that "Availability" refers to the general time range during which the variety is ready to be picked; many harvested varieties still can be purchased long after the pick-your-own season has ended. -- Mary Jane Solomon
