    Hanger Orthopedic manufactures and fits patients with custom-made orthotic devices such as specialized braces and prosthetic limbs. The company operates four manufacturing plants and a chain of 81 patient care centers in 23 states.

    The company continued as a highflier of Wall Street, with its stock price more than doubling since January 1996 to close Friday at $6.625. It became the nation's largest supplier of artificial limbs and braces last summer by buying a privately held rival, J.E. Hanger Inc. of Alpharetta, Ga., for $49 million in cash and stock.

    While assets of the company more than doubled, to $141.7 million, revenue last year jumped $14.3 million but profit fell by more than half, to $1 million.
