If you can't pay the IRS on time, you can avoid penalties by filing for an extension. To get a 4-month extension you must file Form 4868 before the income tax return deadline.

For an additional 2-month extension, file Form 2688.

Note: The IRS will still charge interest on the unpaid balance. Also, understating your tax liability when filing for an extension can make your extension invalid and the IRS will charge you penalty fees.

To send a payment with these forms:
Make check or money order payable to the "United States Treasury"
Write your social security number, daytime phone number, and "2001 Form 4868" on check or money order.


Installments

Another option for payment, is to request monthly installments by filing Form 9465. For more details refer to Tax Topic 202 or Publication 594.
