Revenue comes from a network of 2,000 stores and an Internet auction site that sell donated clothing, computers and household items. Developments: Goodwill Industries, which turned 100 in 2002, launched an international initiative that year to get 20 million people into the workplace and up the career ladder by 2020. Goodwill is the nation's largest provider of welfare-to-work services. Since 1996, when Congress changed the welfare laws to encourage more people to work, Goodwill has provided more than 765,000 recipients of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families with pre- and post-employment services, skills training, job search assistance and other career services. Goodwill earns 98 percent of its own income rather than relying on traditional fundraising or public funding, which allows it to weather changes in local economies better than many other nonprofit organizations. In March, Goodwill Industries International moved to a new member services center in Rockville, a 42,000-square-foot facility where 91 workers will be employed. Goodwill is launching a $2.5 million initiative to monitor its clients' career progress. It is implementing a customized Web-based application that will allow more than 1,000 Goodwill career counselors across the country to streamline and track a client's progress from intake and assessment to training, job placement and career advancement.
