Developments: Last year marked a half-century since Harman and engineer Bernard Kardon founded Harman/Kardon to produce high-fidelity home audio equipment. Now a global conglomerate, the company hit 50 in better shape than ever. Harman stock soared in 2003, starting the year just under $30 a share and finishing over $70. The stock split two-for-one in November. Driving that climb was Harman's presence in the automotive market, where its electronic control systems, which let drivers do everything from playing music to making hands-free phone calls to regulating temperature, did big business with BMW, Mercedes and other luxury brands. Harman also made rear-seat DVD players for Lexus, and its systems will start showing up in General Motors' Buick line in 2005. Last year Harman fortified its digital automotive business by buying the Canadian company Wavemakers, which makes processors and software for voice recognition inside cars. In the home-acoustics market, the company introduced JBL Invader, an 80-watt multichannel speaker system to provide high-performance sound for computers.
