Host Marriott and its hotels were spun off in 1993 from Marriott International, which became solely a hotel operator instead of an owner, and Host Marriott took on much of the older company's debt. Developments: After seeing profit hit hard by the bust in the tourism industry after Sept. 11, 2001, the company said it started to see business travelers coming back last year as the economy strengthened. Net income rose to $14 million, up from a loss of $16 million the year before. Revenue fell 2 percent, to $3.4 billion from $3.5 billion. Host Marriott got a $370 million insurance settlement from the damage done in the 9/11 terrorist attacks to its two hotels in New York—the Marriott World Trade Center, which was destroyed, and the Marriott Financial Center on West Street two blocks away from Ground Zero, which has since reopened. Host Marriott used the insurance money to pay down debt, which was $5.5 billion at the end of last year. It sold eight hotels during the year, including properties in San Antonio, Oklahoma City and Williamsburg, for about $190 million and bought an 806-room Hyatt hotel in Maui for $321 million. It also converted a Swissôtel in Atlanta to its first Westin brand and another Swissôtel it owns in Boston to a Hyatt. Executive Compensation President and CEO: Christopher J.
