It operates 27 satellites and historically has focused on transporting traffic into or out of North America, although it recently purchased four satellites and two additional satellite slots out of bankruptcy from Loral Space & Communications that transmit just within North America. Developments: Intelsat is incorporated in Bermuda, but its headquarters and most of its corporate operations are in Washington. It is a private company that was once controlled by more than 140 international governments and held a monopoly for all satellite connections to and from the United States. All that has changed, in no small part because the satellite industry is much more competitive now. Three years ago Intelsat took the intial step of becoming a corporation, and it is now owned by various telecommunications companies around the world that use its services. This year Intelsat must complete its change to a corporation by selling stock to the public. By an act of Congress, that must be completed by the end of June. The company is also changing in other ways. In the past, a large part of Intelsat's business included carrying phone traffic around the globe. Now, with fiber-optic technology driving down the cost of carrying phone traffic, Intelsat is trying to bolster its broadcast and consumer-Internet businesses.
