It runs more than 2,600 hotels in the United States and 63 other countries and territories. They range from budget accommodations to luxury properties. Its hotels use the brand names Courtyard, Marriott, Residence Inn, SpringHill Suites, Fairfield Inn and Ritz-Carlton. Developments: Last year, for the first time in three years, Marriott and other hotel companies began to see improvement after the worst slowdown to hit the travel industry in decades. But business travelers, Marriott's bread and butter, are still not traveling as much as they were before the recession and 9/11. So while profits jumped by almost half last year, they were boosted in part by tax credits from Marriott's investment in a venture to create cleaner fuel from coal. The company sold half the synthetic fuel business last year and will get out entirely when the credits expire in 2007 to focus on being a hotel company. It also got out of the business of running housing for the elderly and distributing food to hotels and restaurants. The company played musical chairs with upper management. John W. Marriott III, one of the sons of the chief executive, was given a newly created post last year, executive vice president of lodging. His duties include overseeing global sales and marketing, brand management and supervision of North American lodging operations. The move was seen by some analysts and competing hotel executives as Marriott unfolding a succession plan for the company's chief executive, J.W. "Bill" Marriott Jr. At home in Washington, the company will manage a proposed 1,000-plus-room hotel expected to be built near the new convention center. Executive Compensation Chairman and CEO: J. W.
