Developments: Primus reported its first profitable year in 2003. In addition to boosting its annual revenue 26 percent, to $1.29 billion, Primus continued to pay down debt. In the past two years, the company has cut borrowings to $542 million from $1.3 billion. But another big factor for the telecommunications company, which derives 75 percent of its revenue from countries outside the United States, was the continued weakness of the dollar. Primus was able to report a profit in the first and second quarters largely because of currency differences. By the third quarter, the company says it was earning a profit even without the benefits of the currency variations. In the coming year, the company plans to introduce its own voice-over-Internet service. The Internet-based technology allows callers to use the Web to make phone calls around the world for a fraction of their regular cost. Primus plans to begin rolling out the service in June. The company also continues to be upbeat in its comments to analysts and investors. Primus has said revenue should jump by 12 to 15 percent this year.
