Rosenthal Employees: 1500 Local employees: 1500 Description: Rosenthal Automotive operates 14 local dealerships representing 13 different carmakers, including Acura, Honda, Isuzu, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Jeep, Volkswagen, Volvo, Jaguar, Land Rover, Nissan, Toyota and Infiniti. It has outlets throughout the Washington area. Developments: Sales rose but profit fell last year. The privately owned company declined to specify figures but said new-car sales rose 4 percent in 2003 and used-car sales climbed 11 percent. (The company said it had $868 million in revenue in 2002.) Net income dropped because of deep discounting in the automotive industry. Rosenthal said it was shielded from larger declines than competitors because it represents mostly imported cars, whose sales have fallen less dramatically than those of domestic brands. Its Acura dealership in Gaithersburg was the fourth-highest-selling outlet in the country with 1,562 new Acuras driven off the lot in 2003. In 2002, it was the seventh-ranked outlet in the country, company officials said. The company completed major renovations at three of its local dealerships, including Rosenthal Chevrolet in Arlington, Landmark Honda in Alexandria and Fairfax Honda. Robert M. Rosenthal, with Jack Pohanka and other area dealers, is a founder of the Capital Automotive REIT, which buys land and buildings from auto dealerships nationwide and leases them back. The company, based in McLean, completed $333 million in acquisitions in 2003.
