Description: Burke & Herbert Bank & Trust is the oldest continuously operating bank in Virginia, with headquarters housed on the same downtown Alexandria corner since 1871. It offers commercial and consumer loan and deposit services at 16 offices in Northern Virginia.

Developments: As befits a bank that prides itself on its unchanging ways and maintaining the loyalty of its customers, Burke & Herbert last year stuck to its tried-and-true formula of providing friendly, personal banking services. That strategy contrasts starkly with the mega-mergers and consolidations pursued by other financial institutions in the region. The bank's boldest move was to open its 16th branch — its first foray into Prince William County. "We're just holding the course and sticking with the basics of banking. That seems to work for us," said E. Hunt Burke, the president and chief operating officer, who is among the fifth-generation members of the Burke family serving in executive positions at the bank. (The Herbert family sold its interest in 1963, for lack of a male descendant to take the bank's helm.) The formula worked well enough to give Burke & Herbert another year of record earnings and dividends. "Knock on wood, we do a little better each year, and it keeps the stockholders happy," Burke said.
