Description: Comstock is among the smallest of the publicly traded production home builders, which are mostly national in scope. It develops, builds and markets single-family homes, townhouses and condos in the Washington and Raleigh, N.C., markets.

Developments: After 20 years as a private company, Comstock went public on Dec. 14. The initial public offering, launched after nine months of preparation and meetings with more than 100 investor groups in 20 cities, raised $72 million, $18 million more than expected. Chairman and chief executive Christopher Clemente has said that investor interest and record numbers in the company's early filings reflect strong demand and unparalleled job growth in the Washington area. From 1985 until its IPO, the company had delivered more than 2,500 homes valued at $565 million. In its first year-end filing, in March, Comstock reported records in revenue, operating income and profit. In 2004, Comstock introduced its first multi-family high-rise condo project, the Eclipse at Potomac Yard, with 309 sales valued at $117.4 million. The $175 million mixed-use development will have 465 condos and 80,000 square feet of specialty retail uses. In early February, Comstock closed on the $75 million acquisition of the 424-unit Penderbrook rental community in Fair Oaks for conversion to condos. In March, it bought three other Virginia properties for $27 million
